Buffalo Hump Treatment in Chennai

Buffalo hump is excess deposit of fat in the nape of the neck and between the shoulder blades giving a characteristic appearance of a buffalo hump.

Causes of buffalo hump:

1. Glucocorticoids
2. Anti retroviral drugs
3. Lipodystrophy due to obesity

Obesity usually associated with metabolic abnormalities including lipodystrophy. It is a
disorder difficult to define and is caused by multiple factors. 

The characteristic features of lipodystrophy include:

1. Hyperlipidemia
2. Insulin resistance
3. Fat redistribution
4. Increased risk of atherosclerosis

Buffalo hump due to lipodystrophy is an heterogenous syndrome and is a major cause for the alteration in appearance, due to accumulation of subcutaneous fat in the nape of the neck. It is associated with anxiety which is a cause-effect phenomenon.

Surgical treatment of buffalo hump:

Laser liposuction is performed under Tumescent Anaesthesia, specialised form of local
anaesthesia. Through a small 3 mm incision, the laser emulsifies the fat which is aspirated out. The liposuction by laser spares the supporting skin structures, dermis- collagen matrix, conserving the elasticity of the skin. Laser liposuction produces less edema and bruising than conventional liposuction methods and allows a greater degree of skin retraction due to stimulation of the dermis.
