How to know your skin type

Skin is the largest organ of the body. The skin and its derivatives (hair, nails, sweat and oil glands) make up the integumentary system.  One of the main functions of the skin is protection. Determining your skin type involves assessing how your skin behaves under different conditions. Here are the main skin types and their characteristics

1.Normal Skin type

  • It is clear without oil and skin is not sensitive
  • May be few imperfections.
  • The normal skin type can tolerate different products
  • No severe sensitivity.
  • Pores are barely visible.

2. Dry Skin type

  • Pores are almost invisible.
  • Dull, rough complexion and red patches
  • Less elastic skin and more visible lines
  • Thicker cream-based moisturizer twice a day application  is recommended. Look for ingredients like ceramides, glycerine, dimethicone and hyaluronic acid in your moisturizing creams
  • Avoid alpha and beta hydroxyl acids, peels and retinols as these products can increase the dryness
  • Cream based sunscreen is advisable

3. Oily Skin type

  • They are generally acne prone and over production of oil leads to clogged pores
  • Oily skin is prone to blackheads, pimples and other blemishes
  • Less prone to wrinkles.
  • It is characterized by a glossy and oily appearance with enlarged pores.
  • Niacinamide can help regulate oil secretion and give a natural glow without oil

4. Combination Skin type

  • Can be dry in the cheeks and oily in other areas like the (T-zone- nose, forehead, and chin)
  • Regular  exfoliation helps in balancing the skin
  • Pores that look larger than normal
  • Light moisturizers to the entire face and more intensive creams to the dry areas

5. Sensitive Skin type

  • Characterised by frequent redness, dryness, itching and burning
  • Highly reactive skin type. Easily irritated by environmental factors and cosmetic products
  • Use products that gently hydrate your skin
  • A gentle and consistent routine works best
  • Hypoallergic and fragrance free products are advisable

To determine your skin type, you can try the following method:

Cleanse Your Face

      Wash your face with a mild cleanser and pat dry

Wait for an Hour

Observe Your Skin

               If your skin feels tight or looks flaky, you likely have Dry skin.

               If it looks shiny all over, you have Oily skin.

               If you have shine only on your T-zone, you have Combination skin.

               If your skin feels comfortable and not oily, you have Normal skin.

               If your skin shows signs of redness, itching, or irritation, you might have Sensitive skin.

Identifying your skin type can help you choose the right skincare products and routines for maintaining healthy skin.
