Verruca Vulgaris [Warts]

Verruca Vulgaris, commonly known as warts, is a benign [noncancerous ] skin condition caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). These warts typically appear as small, rough, and raised growths on the skin, often on the hands and fingers, but they can occur anywhere on the body. Warts can be spread from one location on the body to another or from person to person by contact with the wart.

Are warts contagious?

Warts are contagious because of Human papilloma virus.

Direct spread by skin-to-skin contact.

Characteristics

  • Appearance : Rough, cauliflower-like surface with a well-defined border.
  • Color : Flesh-colored, white, pink, or tan.
  • Size :  Typically small, ranging from a few millimeters to over a centimeter in diameter.
  • Location :  Commonly found on the hands, fingers, knees, and elbows.

Causes of verruca vulgaris

  • Virus :  Caused by various strains of HPV, particularly types 2 & 4
  • Transmission :  Spread through direct contact with infected skin or surfaces.

Treatment

  • Over-the-counter products :  The chemicals contain salicylic acid dissolves warts one layer at a time, so takes several weeks to months to get rid of the wart completely.
  • Cryotherapy :  Freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen. The wart may peel of eventually, but needs several treatme
  • Laser therapy :  Using laser light to destroy wart tissue.
  • Immunotherapy :  Stimulating the immune system to fight the virus that causes warts.  Topically DCP [diphencyprone] causes mild allergic reaction  and helps to get rid of the wart.
  • Surgical removal : Removing the wart using Iris surgical scissors give excellent results. No scarring and patient satisfaction is very high.
